Which Tint Shade Is Right For You?

Window tinting shades are measured by VLT (visible light transmission), which is the percentage of light that passes through your windows. The higher the percentage, the lighter the tint.

How Window Tinting Works

When choosing a window film, you should first understand how it works—how it keeps heat out and protects against fading and unwanted glare. The heat we feel from the sun comes from three sources: 53% is infrared rays (IR), 44% is visible light transmission (VLT), and 3% is ultraviolet rays (UV). These solar energy components react in three ways when they hit a surface. They are either reflected off of the surface, transmitted through the surface, or absorbed into the surface.

The sun’s infrared radiation is invisible to the human eye, but we can still feel it as heat. The good news is, several window films on the market claim an infrared rejection of well over 90%. So if infrared radiation is solar energy we feel as heat, does that mean that these films block out over 90% of the sun’s heat?

Although we humans experience infrared radiation as heat, it only accounts for about 53% of the total heat we receive from the sun.

Both visible light (44%) and ultraviolet light (3%) make up the remaining 47% of the sun’s heat that reaches us here on Earth. So while it’s all good and well to say a film rejects 90% of infrared, it still leaves us in the dark about the how the film deals with the remaining 47% of the sun’s heat.

Ultraviolet (UV) is a part of the electromagnetic spectrum with a frequency greater than visible light and only accounts for about 3% of solar energy. It’s also the most dangerous portion and can damage parts of the eye even though it is not visible to the human eye. In the past, to block a lot of heat, you had to have a very dark window film; however, technology has advanced quite a bit over the years.

This advanced technology allows for lighter window film with the high heat-rejection qualities of dark window film. As you can see, 53% of the sun’s energy comes to us in the infrared spectrum, 44% from the visible light spectrum, and 3% from the ultraviolet spectrum. All of these three areas comprise the solar spectrum, and their combined energy is what we are referring to when we use the term “total solar energy.”
Pie Chart For UV Rays

Window films act as a filter reducing varying percentages of each part of the solar spectrum. Darker films will filter out more visible light, resulting in energy reduction, whereas lighter films have to filter out more infrared to reject large amounts of energy. Films can be designed to work on either one part of the solar spectrum or all three.

Then, when we read the specification called “Total Solar Energy Rejection” (TSER), we can now see that it does not refer to temperature reduction percentage. Still, instead, it is the percentage of incident solar energy rejection. The TSER specification and another commonly used in the glass industry called the “Solar Heat Gain Coefficient” (SHGC) are two excellent ways for a consumer to compare the performance of window film to another.

The solar radiation chart is divided into three wavelengths. The ultraviolet band, which measures from 100-400 nanometers, is the part of the spectrum responsible for fading out carpets, drapes, fabrics, and paint.
